Chestnuts

The Chestnuts class (Years 1 and 2) has been running since September 2008 and is proving to be a huge success. Currently there are 17 boys, in the mixed year class, with a full-time teacher and a full-time teaching assistant. 

There is a two year rolling programme for English, maths, science and topics. This is so the boys avoid repetition from one year to the next. Generally the subjects and topics within the National Curriculum are followed, but these can be changed or altered to better suit the needs and interests of the children.

Our day begins at 8.30am and ends at 3.30pm. The boys can be dropped off any time after 7.45am and collected after 3.30pm up to 5.30pm. The boys have access to the computer suite, and computers in our library, to help with developing their ICT and researching skills. Computers can be used cross-curricular.  There is a daily PE/games lesson with a member of staff from the PE department. Gymnastics, rugby, hockey, football, cricket, athletics and tennis are taught, along with developing gross motor skills, such as throwing and catching a ball of different sizes and weights, and having an awareness of what positive effects exercise can have on the body.

The boys attend a weekly drama lesson run by our drama teacher. They are taught drama games, public speaking techniques and take part in an annual Christmas play. We use our well-resourced art room for art once a week and attend one chapel service a week with the rest of the school.
