Music is a very popular subject at Lockers Park - nearly all boys learn to play at least one instrument and all boys have at least one class music lesson per week. The department is staffed by one full-time member of staff and eleven visiting teachers who teach a variety of instruments to a high standard. Grade 8 of the Associated Board has been achieved by boys in recent years, and many leave with Grade 5+.
The overriding policy of the department is that all children are inherently musical, and the staff strive to help each individual find where his particular ability lies. Hence, there is a sophisticated system of free lessons in place, in order to find the "right" instrument for each pupil, and inevitably a concentration on singing, the most pure and original form of music-making.
The school choirs achieve a high standard, and the Chapel Choir make visits to sing in local churches and cathedrals, as well as regularly contributing to the worship in our beautiful chapel which has its own organ.
The department is well resourced with space and facilities and owns a sizeable collection of instruments for hire. Tuition is available in Piano, Organ, Singing, Recorder, Drums, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Horn, Cornet, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, Electric Guitar and Bass Guitar. As well as choirs, there are string orchestras, brass ensembles, guitar groups, a jazz band, a clarinet quartet and a cello ensemble.
Much emphasis is put on maintaining high standards, and so it is no surprise that in the last twenty years, one or more boys have been successful in gaining Music Scholarships to senior schools, including Bedford, Eton, Harrow, Shrewsbury, Stowe and Uppingham.
