“Are You Smarter Than Your Scouting Son?”

On Monday at Scouts we welcomed Hemel Hempstead District Commissioner Russ Dyble and the Scouts’ parents to witness the investiture of 6 new Scouts, 3 new Adult Leaders and 3 new Young Leaders. We also rewarded some of our members by ‘promoting’ them up the ranks. This is always a difficult decision, but some of the boys have developed Scouting skills far beyond expectation and this has been recognised by making them up to Senior Patrol/Patrol/Assistant Patrol Leaders. The main Investiture Evening every year is an opportunity to invite parents to test their skills against the Scouts in our “Are You Smarter Than Your Scouting Son?” challenge.

This year’s task was to make a trebuchet that fires marshmallows. Four patrols competed against 2 parent teams and were to be judged on the best-built catapult (showing lashing skills) and also which one would fire furthest. When everyone had completed the construction and practised firing marshmallow missiles across the old gym we gathered in the front car park for the floodlit final…

For the first time this year, our Scouts well and truly beat their parents – Stags patrol won the furthest flung missile while Wolves won the constructors’ award. Well done to all involved, and thank you to the parents for coming to support what has become a truly memorable annual event!
