Well the results are in. Mr Filer returned to school to discuss them.
There was some good news – the antibacterial gel used in school is very effective, but the best results were where someone washed their hands with soap and then used the gel as well. What I think will have surprised many of the boys is that, even after washing their hands, the evidence indicates that bacteria are still present on their hands. (I’ve seen the boys washing their hands and they certainly aren’t as thorough as a surgeon!) 7 different strains of bacteria were found to be growing on the cultures, including penicillium species. It just shows how prevalent bacteria are all around us and highlights the importance of washing hands to prevent their spread. Very many thanks to Mr Filer for giving us his expertise and also for giving up his time. I expect our Year 6s’ to have pristine hands from now on!
