Science is one of our most popular subjects and many of our pupils go on to take science based University degrees. One of the reasons that it is so popular, is that it is very much a hands on subject, with pupils of all ages actively doing experiments each week. Our Year 8 boys were learning about forces, specifically friction. They launched a wooden car down a ramp and timed how long it took to travel. This timing was done automatically with a nice bit of hardware involving reed switches and magnets, to make it a “fair test”. After a certain number of goes they changed the material that the car travelled on and then repeated the timings. Results were carefully recorded and collated, average times worked out and conclusions reached. Real science in action!
