Our Year 7 pupils are studying plants at the moment. Today they established that plants store starch (made from the glucose they make by photosynthesis). They took a leaf and boiled it for 2 minutes to soften it, before immersing it in ethanol which was in a test tube in a water bath. Finally they put some iodine solution on it which turned black, proving starch was present. They then took a sample of a rhubarb leaf and looked at it closely under a microscope. They could clearly see the stomata present. At Lockers Park we find our pupils learn more when they do and see things for themselves.
Life is always busy at Lockers Park and this is a snapshot of everything that has been going on.
